Breast Milk Production
Executive summary about good milk supply by The Green Guru
Many mothers worry about their breast milk production. Used properly it is often an effective method to increasing breast milk. Most people who take fenugreek see an increase in milk production within 2-4 days.
Fenugreek can then be discontinued once your milk supply is stimulated to a target level. Generally, the milk production is then maintained as long as you are nursing fairly often and emptying both sides.
Here is a simple recipe for making your own tea at home to help increase your breast milk production.
2 parts Red Raspberry Leaf (organic, cut, sifted)
2 parts Fennel Seed (organic, whole)
2 parts Nettle Leaf (organic, cut, sifted)
1 part Fenugreek Seed (organic, whole)
1 part Dandelion Leaf (organic, cut, sifted)
1/2 part Blessed Thistle (organic, cut, sifted)
There are some other things you can do to help increase your breast milk production.
1. Apricots, asparagus, green beans, sweet potatoes, pecans, and all leafy greens are considered helpful in increasing and sustaining breast milk.
2. Maybe if you are near your baby you would put her to your breast more which may increase your breast milk. The more times you nurse the more times your body is stimulated to produce breast milk.
3. Empty both breasts in the shower.
4. Nurse your baby to sleep a few times. Babies nurse while they sleep. More nursing means more milk!
It is very rare for a woman to have a medical reason their milk supply is low. Here are some of those occasional reasons that can affect breast milk production.
1. Little breast changes during pregnancy can sometimes indicate that there are fewer milk-making glands present than in normal breasts.
2. If you have had a breast reduction, you may experience production issues. In any surgery where there is an incision around the areola, there is a risk that the milk ducts in the breast could be severed. This will interfere with milk drainage and disrupt the nerves running between the nipple and areola.
3. Let-down problems. If your breasts cannot release their milk, the back up will signal your breasts to slow down and eventually stop producing. In others, medication can help.
Is My Baby Getting Enough Breastmilk?
Executive summary about good milk supply by Vincent Iannelli, M.D.
Breastfeeding mothers frequently ask how to know their babies are getting enough milk. In the long run, weight gain is the best indication whether the baby is getting enough, but rules about weight gain appropriate for bottle fed babies may not be appropriate for breastfed babies.
A baby who is obtaining lots of milk at the breast sucks in a very characteristic way, generally opens his mouth fairly wide as he sucks and the rhythm is slow and steady. Then, the baby closes his mouth again. This pause does not refer to the pause between suckles, but rather to the pause during one suckle as the baby opens his mouth to its maximum. Each one of these pauses corresponds to a mouthful of milk and the longer the pause, the more milk the baby got. The baby who nibbles only, is probably not.
For the first few days after delivery, the baby passes meconium, a dark green, almost black, substance. Meconium accumulates in the baby's gut during pregnancy. A baby who is breastfeeding only, and is starting to have bowel movements which are becoming lighter by day 3 of life, is doing well. A baby who is passing only brown bowel movements is probably not getting enough, but this is not sure.
